Winderider Film Forum, Bay Area • Cinema in Conversation • July 12-14, 2012

What is the Windrider Film Form?

Many filmmakers have become the prophetic voice in our culture, creating films that do more than simply entertain us. They help us to see our world with a different set of eyes. They explore the human condition with creativity, compassion and respect; and they inspire us to find ways to make a difference in the world and in our local community. Windrider forums are all about community, connecting and creating space for conversation. In the words of C. S. Lewis, “The first demand any work of art makes upon us is surrender. Look. Listen. Receive. Get yourself out of the way.”

The three film forums were:

• “Rising From Ashes” (7 p.m. Thursday, July 12), a documentary about the first Rwandans National Cycling Team, whose members were personally impacted by the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. T.C. Johnstone, producer and director, participated in the discussion.

• “The Hammer” (7 p.m. Friday, July 13), the true story of the first deaf wrestler to win a national collegiate championship. Oren Kaplan, the director, participated in the Q&A session along with the film’s co-star, deaf actress Shoshannah Stern.

• “Red Dog” (7 p.m. Saturday, July 14), the true story of a dog’s impact on a mining community in the Australian outback. Lead actor Josh Lucas and screenwriter Daniel Paplitz discussed the film with the audience.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — It seemed every type of movie about music had been made, but Ari Gold had a new idea: air-drumming.

The result is Adventures of Power, a comedic celebration of the seemingly absurd idea of playing nonexistent drums. Along with writer/director/star Gold, the film features Jane Lynch (“Glee”), Adrian Grenier (“Entourage”), Shoshannah Stern (“Jericho,” “Weeds”) and Michael McKean (The Grand, This is Spinal Tap).

Phase 4 Films streeted the DVD Jan. 25 ($29.99) and on Jan. 27 filled a Santa Monica Boulevard bar with the stars of the film.

“You will laugh, you will cry and your soul will be enriched by this story,” said Gold, who praised everyone’s performance in the film, but gave especially high marks to Lynch. “She’s just a lot of fun to watch.”

There’s more than an hour of bonus features included with the DVD, including an interview and drum-off with Rush drummer Neil Peart, a music video starring Grenier (“You get to see me in leather pants,” he confided), deleted scenes, short films, trailers, fan videos and postcards from the set.

“We had a very motivated director, and through him we put together this wealth of extras,” said Larry Greenberg, SVP of acquisitions for Phase 4. “This is something fans will want to own. I’ve been following air-drumming all my life, and this film is hilarious. I fell in love with it.”

In addition to the DVD launch, Phase 4 made a charity auction — benefiting the VH1 Save the Music Foundation — part of the event. Celebrity-signed instruments included a cymbal from Ringo Starr and drums from Peart, Marky Ramone and Lars Ulrich; along with experiential items such as lunch with Ramone and an actor audition with director David Wain (Role Models); and a one-year supply of Ontisuka Tiger sneakers (worth $1,200).

“With [Phase 4 and Adventures of Power’s help], we will be able to continue to raise awareness about the importance of a musical education in a child’s life, and ensure that additional children have access to the benefits of music study,” said Paul Cothran, executive director of the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.

Also attending the event were drummers Peart (Rush), Claude Coleman (Ween), Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa); comedians/folk musicians Garfunkel & Oates; comedian Neil Hamburger; and musician Soko. The event also featured a performance by Grenier’s indie-folk band, The Honey Brothers.

Would I lie to you? Probably. But I’m telling you the truth when I say that Lie to Me has just cast Shoshannah Stern. The Jericho alum will recur during the show’s upcoming third season as a grad student hired to help Dr. Lightman (Tim Roth) write his new book.

Though some of psychologist’s colleagues fret that the newbie’s disability will make her job all but impossible—like the actress, the character is deaf—Lightman takes a shine to her.

Thoughts? Be honest, you think Stern is a pretty fantastic addition, don’t you? Hit the comments!

To my wonderful, amazing supporters—

This new chapter in my life has entered upon a wave of happiness and appreciation. I have been able to fulfill things that I’ve only dreamed about ever since I was a little girl, daydreaming in my little house in Fremont. Sometimes, when I get caught up in the little things in my present-day life, such as paying the bills, getting into a fender bender, or eating a little too much sushi and feeling temporarily bloated, I tell myself to stop and step outside of the present moment, and look at where I am now. That never fails to help me appreciate the beauty of life.

Finally getting to achieve my dream of acting professionally has made me grow where it really counts. I feel like I am a stronger person now within my heart and my spirit. Acting is a tough profession. It comes and goes, as many of you may already know. However, what makes me stay positive and persevere is you all, the people who have written to me or told me in person how much they believe in me and support me. I now believe that what I am doing is bigger than myself. With everything that I do, I’m trying to add a new dimension to how people out there see the deaf community, not just as deaf people, but individuals with minds and personalities of their own.

I come from the deaf community, and that has shaped me and allowed me to do everything I have done. I’m forever grateful for that and for the support that the community has shown me. I hope to continue to make you all proud in my forthcoming years!

All my love and gratitude,

Shoshannah
